Information
The roots of the flag colors blue and yellow date back to the Middle Ages. In Kievan Rus, a large empire considered the origin of the states Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine today, the colors appeared in a religious context. The national colors derive from the coat of arms of the "Principality of Galicia-Volhynia" in the 13th century and depict a golden lion on a blue field.
Today, the colors of the Ukrainian flag are associated with the country's landscape: blue represents the sky, yellow the ripe wheat fields.
