The Flag of Sweden in Mourning Display

Mourning and half-mast flagging always follow fixed rituals and arrangements. As with all national flags, the Swedish banner flag is not flown at half-mast but is adorned on both sides with a mourning ribbon.

Flag Description

The flag of Sweden consists of a yellow cross on a blue background, where the cross is perpendicular to the flag edge. The Swedish flag in its current form was officially introduced on June 22 1906 and has an aspect ratio of 16:10. The arms of the yellow cross each correspond to half the height of the blue fields. The blue fields are designed with height to width ratios of 4:5 (inner side) and 4:9 (outer side).

What does the cross on the Swedish flag mean?

The Scandinavian cross is also called the St. Philip's cross and is found in similar form on the flags of Denmark, Norway, Iceland, and Finland. Over the years, the combination of design elements has become a symbol of Scandinavian unity and is also used on many regional and territorial flags.

What colors does the flag of Sweden have?

The colors of the Swedish flag originate from the coat of arms of the royal family. The law 1982:269 / § 3 describes the colors as light medium blue on the fields and golden yellow on the cross.*
